Showpiece

Last updated: 3 October 2026

Showpiece is a Mac app for making App Store screenshots. It is made by Gruffydd Johnston, an independent developer (“I”, “me”). This policy explains what information the app handles, where it goes, and the choices you have.

In short

  • Your projects, screenshots and captions stay on your Mac. I never receive them.
  • The app sends anonymous usage counts so I can see which features are used and what goes wrong. You can turn this off.
  • Purchases are handled by Apple, and RevenueCat keeps track of whether you have Showpiece Pro.
  • There are no accounts, no advertising, no tracking across apps, and nothing is sold.

Your Work Stays on Your Mac

Projects, screenshots, captions, designs and exported images are saved only where you save them. Showpiece does not upload them anywhere, except when you choose to upload images to App Store Connect (see below). The app also keeps its settings on your Mac: your preferences, the folders you allow its command line to use, and whether you have Showpiece Pro.

Anonymous Usage Analytics

To learn which features are used and what to improve, Showpiece sends anonymous usage signals to TelemetryDeck, a privacy-focused analytics service. A signal says that something happened, such as a project being opened, a built-in preset being applied, images being exported, or a command line command being run, with details like how many files were exported, which screenshot sizes and languages they were for, which file format was chosen, how long the export took, or which command-line options were used.

When something goes wrong, such as an export or upload failing, the signal includes a short error code, for example the code macOS gives for a full disk. It never includes the error’s message, which could mention a file or folder name.

Each signal also includes general information about the app and your Mac: the app version, macOS version, Mac model and processor type, display size, language and region settings, and whether light or dark mode is on. To count users without knowing who they are, the app creates a random identifier on your Mac, which is scrambled (hashed) before it is sent.

Signals never include your captions, screenshots, file names, folder paths, the names of presets you saved, your name, your email address, or anything else that identifies you.

Your choice: turn off “Share anonymous usage data” in Showpiece › Settings, and nothing more is sent. The command line also sends nothing when the DO_NOT_TRACK environment variable is set. How TelemetryDeck handles data on its side is described in TelemetryDeck’s privacy policy.

Purchases

Showpiece Pro is sold through the Mac App Store. Apple handles payment; I never see your payment details, name or Apple Account. Apple’s handling of your data is covered by Apple’s privacy policy.

To know whether you have Showpiece Pro, to restore it on another Mac and to show your subscription’s renewal date, the app uses RevenueCat. RevenueCat receives the details of your App Store purchases of Showpiece (which product, when it was bought, price, currency, storefront country, renewal status and transaction identifiers), a random identifier RevenueCat creates for this copy of the app, and general information such as the app version, macOS version and language. I can see this purchase information, without your identity, in RevenueCat’s dashboard. See RevenueCat’s privacy policy.

When You Send Things to Apple

  • Uploading to App Store Connect. If you upload images, the app sends them directly to Apple’s App Store Connect, using the API key you provide. The key is stored in your Mac’s keychain and is never sent to me.
  • Translating captions. Caption translation uses Apple’s Translation framework, which translates on your Mac and may download language files from Apple.
  • Crash reports. If you have chosen in macOS settings to share analytics with app developers, Apple may share crash reports from Showpiece with me.

What I Don’t Do

Showpiece has no accounts and shows no advertising. It does not track you across other apps or websites, does not use data for advertising, and nothing is sold or shared with data brokers.

How Long Information Is Kept

Anonymous usage signals are kept by TelemetryDeck and used only in aggregate. Purchase records are kept by RevenueCat for as long as they are needed to manage subscriptions and for accounting. Everything on your Mac stays until you delete it; removing the app and its data from your Mac removes the app’s settings and its random identifiers.

Your Rights

Depending on where you live, including under the UK and EU General Data Protection Regulation, you have the right to ask what information is held about you, and to have it corrected or deleted. Because analytics are anonymous and purchases are not linked to your identity, I usually cannot find records that belong to you, but I will help however I can: write to me at the address below. Analytics rely on my legitimate interest in improving the app, and you can switch them off at any time; purchase records are needed to provide what you bought.

Children

Showpiece is a tool for app developers and is not directed at children. I do not knowingly collect information from children.

Changes to This Policy

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new “last updated” date. Significant changes will also be mentioned in the app’s release notes.
